Speech Pathology

Speech pathologists evaluate, diagnose and treat speech, cognitive, communication and swallowing disorders. They can assist patients in recovering their speaking, eating, listening, reading, thinking and writing skills.

Speech Pathology has treatment programs for the following issues:

  • Adult Speech/Language and Cognition
  • Disfluent speech (stuttering)
  • Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) by passing a flexible scope to view the throat while patient swallows
  • Loss of voice
  • Neuromuscular electrical stimulation for the treatment of swallowing
  • Pediatric speech/language
  • Reading
  • Swallowing Disorders (including electric stimulation)
  • Specialized dysphagia services include: Videoswallow, where a motion video x-ray is taken while patient swallows
  • Throat spasms
  • Video swallow studies
  • Vocal Cord Augmentation in which a synthetic material is injected into the vocal cords to correct vocal cord insufficiency
  • Vocal Cord Denervation in which Botox is injected into the vocal cords to relax muscles and relieve difficulty speaking
  • Voice restoration following total laryngectomy

Speech-language pathologists evaluate patients and develop treatment plans to promote maximum improvement.
